Red Sky at Night Sailor’s Delight
First, this weather lore has its roots first in Scripture when the foolish Pharisees and Sadducees (religious teachers/priests plotting the death of Jesus) were hounding Jesus asking Him to show them a sign from heaven. He calmly tells them, “2 When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red. 3 And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowering. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?” (KJV)
Then, Shakespeare said something similar in his play, Venus and Adonis. “Like a red morn that ever yet betokened, Wreck to the seaman, tempest to the field, Sorrow to the shepherds, woe unto the birds, Gusts and foul flaws to herdmen and to herds.”
Now, sailors and shepherds have been saying something similar for centuries to try and predict the seas or weather. Though we had a “Red Sky Morning” here in Florida, the Weather Channel says 75 and sunny…thank you Jesus! We will see what actually occurs.
But can the color or the sky truly predict the weather?
Below is what the Library of Congress says (ref: http://www.loc.gov/rr/scitech/mysteries/weather-sailor.html):
Weather lore concerning the appearance of the sky, the conditions of the atmosphere, the type or movement of the clouds, and the direction of the winds may have a scientific basis and likely can predict the weather.
This Christmas morning 2012, I just missed the “Red Sky at Morning” my Step-Pop Lee saw on the farm, so the accompanying photograph from the Library of Congress will have to do, but here the majestic Sand Cranes in the park cooed & cawed, and I thank God for the most precious gift, the gift of His Son who came down from Heaven and was born in a dirty stable as a servant even though He had created EVERYthing around Him.
I do not know what exactly He has in store for me or you on this Christmas day, or any day in our lives, but I am thankful for God the Son (Jesus Christ)! He is the GREATEST gift I could ever receive regardless what color the sky is today.
And as I reflect on the Red Sky this Christmas morn I wonder if it’s simply a reminder that the Blood & Sacrifice of Christ is alive and well and He is the true reason for the Christmas season.
