Windows 8.1 update 1 provides some welcome improvements to the Windows 8 operating system.  For many the best item returned is the title bar with its red X in the top right corner to close programs.  Yes, the hand is gone!  If the hand is gone when you try to close a program and have to use the red X, you are all set and no other actions are required.  If the update did not automatically install, you need to follow the procedures below.

  1. Open the Charms Bar and click on the Settings icon
  2. Click on “Change PC settings”
  3. Click the gray “Check Now” box.
  4. After the check is complete click “View details”.

Note:  The Windows 8 update for X64-based systems (KB2919355) should be downloaded and installed by itself.  At this point make sure there is no checkmark in the box for this update.   5. Install all updates until KB291955 is the only update in the Important Update area.  You may have to follow this procedure several times before KB291955 is the only important update available to install.   6. After completing the Windows 8.1 Update 1 it is recommended that you also update the recommended updates for your system.   Keeping your computer up to date provides you with better security.     Rich Clark
